Netflix for the Wii arrives!

by bacon on Apr.12, 2010, under Wii

Been waiting long enough.  Sure there’s no HD, but it’s free as opposed to the Xbox version.  Ordered the disk today, have to see how it pans out.  The Wii already has a leg up as it’s whisper quiet and the 360 is loud as a jet engine.  But if the quality sucks, or for whatever reason stutters etc., it won’t matter how quiet and free the Wii version is.

PS3 gets free Netflix, better step up MS!

I really home MS figures out that it’s pointless to keep Netflix limited to Gold Xbox LIVE subscriptions.  Given that you can already stream it for free (with Netflix membership of course) via PlayOn to you 360, and now more importantly simply with your PS3, one would assume the beancounters at MS would cave and put Netflix on the Silver tier.  Sadly, I sort of doubt they will.  I wonder what the reasoning for that will be.  ”We feel Netflix on the 360 is a far better experience, justifying the added cost of a Gold supscription.”  Yeah right…

How come Netflix on Xbox isn’t free(r)?

by bacon on Sep.01, 2009, under Xbox 360

It has only occured to me recently that MS packaging Netflix streaming with the Gold Xbox LIVE membership is so very annoying.  I’ve gotten into the habit of buying 1-3 month cards for LIVE rather than whole years since there are periods of a month or two where I just don’t have a ton of time for online gaming, but TV every once in a while, and movies fit in fine.  So what am I getting from MS since I’m already paying Netflix separately?  Playing on a PC is free.  I could use the little Roku player free (after purchase) instead of the Xbox, or a few new DVD/Blu-ray players.

So what gives?

A few ideas do come to mind.

  • Why is this exclusive, at least on gaming consoles to the Xbox? Obviously the PS3 could handle a Netflix app, but there isn’t one (I know you can cobble it together if you have a PC too, but that really isn’t necessary).
  • Is MS doing all the development for the player on their own?
  • Is MS paying Netflix for the exclusivity right now?

Gotta wonder about the last one.  Netflix even had a survey asking if you had a PS3 and would be willing to pay $9.99 to stream video (I assume that’s a one time price for an app, but maybe just the monthly fee).
